Feudo D’Elimi Grillo, Sicily
|
Dating back some 2500 years, Grillo is a delicate grape variety with Greek origins. thought to have come to Italy via Apulia . The wine is a classic pale straw yellow in color, with aromas of apricots and tropical fruits. Typically dry and mineral, this variety is often confused with Sauvignon Blanc for its freshness and Chardonnay for its complexity, as it abounds with tropical fruit, apricot and nectarine characters. Delicious as an aperitif, and excellent with Pan-Asian cuisine.

Fattoria di Faltognano Chianti Montalbano, Tuscany

of his hometown (His surname means “from Vinci”). He may well have made this statement tasting the wine of Roberto Comparini’s ancestors, the Comparini Bardzky family, whose ownership of this estate dates back to around 1,000 AD. For generations all grafting of plants have occurred within their property, creating singular clones perfectly adapted to their soil and climate. The vineyards are harvested one at a time and fermented separately, due to the varying altitudes and ripening periods and all vineyards face south for greatest growing and ripening. This is a traditional blend of 95% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo & Malvasia Nera. The wine is round and med-bodied with good aromas of fruit and spice. Tannins are balanced with crisp clean acidity. Good Chianti makes every meal a celebration.

Rapitala Casalj 2004
|
“The best-kept secret about Sicilian wine is that some of it is white and some of that is quite good. Rapitala is a winery on the north side of the island, with north-facing vineyards that help temper the effects of the blistering Sicilian sun. Rapitala’s vineyards also are at some altitude and planted on the slopes, which produces fresher, more elegant wines in this region. The Casalj is a blend of the indigenous grape catarratto and chardonnay and thus it combines rich viscosity with a fresh, crisp edge. This wine is a wonderful companion to roast pork, chicken and meatier fish.” 89 points

Rapitala` Piano Maltese Bianco 2006
|
This is a terrific affordable white, crisp enough to have that light prickle on the tip of the tongue when you first sip it, then developing zesty citrus flavors and a nice, light, seashell-minerality. It's from Sicily, a fifty-fifty blend of the local varieties Grillo and Catarratto. Summer's waning-start grilling those shrimp now, and pour some of this to go with them. Soon the days will be dark, and you'll be stuck eating roast boar and slurping down 17% alcohol Zinfandels until Spring rolls around
